Born In the USA

In recent years, Hornsleth’s work has frequently visited themes involving China’s economic rise. The themes include fear, xenophobia, lost identity and the effect of capitalism on eastern cultures.

‘Born In The USA’ revisits many of these themes. The scene features young Chinese students celebrating. The composition has been elongated to make the students look more western. Their hand signals appear to be mimicking those of Americans at rock concerts or sports events. The student in the bottom right corner can clearly be seen laughing as he gestures with his middle finger turned upside down.
